Week of January 13, 2025 – City of Thomasville Engineer Mentors

Cyberstingers Teams Benefit from City of Thomasville Engineering Mentorship

The Cyberstingers robotics teams—Cyberstingers Gold 6988, Cyberstingers Blue 5979, and Cyberstingers Green 8433—were excited to host engineers from the City of Thomasville during the week of January 13, 2025. This unique mentorship opportunity allowed students to interact with professionals in various engineering fields, gaining valuable insights into careers and skills that align with their robotics and STEM interests.

Throughout the week, engineers from different departments visited the classroom, sharing their expertise and experiences:

  • Monday, January 13: Trey Owens, a project manager, kicked off the week with an engaging session of professional mentorship.
  • Tuesday, January 14: Jeremy Carter, an electrical engineer and department manager, learned about the intricacies of FTC robotics control systems and relayed his feedback based on his experience delivering electricity to the city.
  • Wednesday, January 15: Britt Wetherington, an expert in civil engineering projects, shared insights.

This partnership exemplifies how mentorship can inspire students and provide a glimpse into real-world applications of engineering principles. Cyberstingers team members learn about potential academic and career paths. And, experienced professionals have the change to share opportunities, including Service Academies and technical universities like the Colorado School of Mines.

Looking ahead, the Cyberstingers are excited about an upcoming SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system presentation and site visit scheduled for January 30, 2025. This field trip will deepen their understanding of critical systems that monitor and manage industrial processes, offering another incredible opportunity to bridge classroom learning with practical application.

We are grateful to the City of Thomasville for their support and dedication to mentoring our teams. Partnerships like these help foster the next generation of engineers and innovators while enriching our robotics program. Stay tuned for more updates on the Cyberstingers’ exciting journey!
